Welfare Considerations

Tigers in inadequate captivity suffer profoundly. Confinement in small enclosures causes repetitive pacing (stereotypies), a clear sign of psychological distress. Cubs separated early from mothers experience acute suffering and compromised immune development. Adult tigers in entertainment or petting facilities face constant forced contact, abnormal social conditions and often poor nutrition. Even well-meaning private owners cannot meet tiger welfare needs. Genuine sanctuaries provide large naturalistic enclosures, appropriate social conditions and freedom from public interaction.
