The floor surface in dairy cow housing profoundly affects hoof health, lying comfort and overall welfare. Poor flooring is a leading cause of lameness and suffering on dairy farms.
Flooring is one of the most significant but often neglected drivers of dairy cow welfare. Cows evolved walking on soft, yielding ground. Modern concrete flooring causes chronic hoof trauma leading to sole haemorrhage, white line disease and ulcers — conditions that cause significant pain and affect gait, feeding behaviour and social interactions. Lame cows lie down more (to relieve foot pain), eat less and produce less milk. Rubber flooring has been shown in multiple studies to improve gait, reduce lameness prevalence and increase walking speed. Combined with adequate stall bedding depth and appropriate stall dimensions, flooring improvements represent among the highest welfare-impact investments a dairy farm can make.
