Cattle are intensely social animals whose welfare is profoundly affected by social management decisions. The dairy industry practice of separating cows and calves within hours of birth is one of the most significant welfare concerns in modern agriculture: both mother and calf show clear, sustained distress responses including extended calling, reduced feed intake and increased activity. Adult cattle moved between farms or regrouped within herds experience acute social stress as new hierarchies are established through fighting. Research shows that keeping familiar groups together, minimising regrouping, and providing pair or small-group housing for young calves significantly improves welfare.
