Honeybee welfare sits at an unusual intersection of individual animal welfare and superorganism colony welfare. Individual bees can experience stress and harm, but colony-level welfare and individual welfare can diverge: bees may sacrifice themselves for colony survival, and colonies can remain productive while many individual bees suffer from parasites or pesticide exposure. Varroa mite infestation causes direct physical harm — mites feed on bee fat bodies causing immune deficiency and virus transmission.
