Cultivated meat represents one of the most potentially transformative technologies for animal welfare in existence. If successfully scaled, it could dramatically reduce or eliminate the suffering of billions of farm animals annually. However, current production methods retain welfare problems through reliance on fetal bovine serum harvested from calves removed from slaughtered pregnant cows. This welfare cost in the development phase is a genuine ethical concern that needs resolution through serum-free media development. The technology also faces significant scaling challenges before it can compete with conventional meat on cost and volume. Welfare advocates who support cultivated meat development while also pushing for FBS elimination and rigorous welfare standards for the development process take the most coherent position.
