Dehorning and disbudding are among the most common and painful procedures performed on cattle. Improved pain management and breeding for polled genetics offer significant welfare improvements.
Dehorning and disbudding without adequate pain management causes unnecessary suffering that can be largely eliminated. Both disbudding calves without anaesthetic and dehorning adult cattle cause acute pain that affects behaviour, appetite, and stress hormones for extended periods. The combination of local anaesthetic, sedation, and post-operative analgesia significantly reduces suffering. Longer-term, breeding polled cattle eliminates the need for the procedure altogether.
