Aquaculture Welfare

Aquaculture Carp Welfare in Asian Production

Carp are the most farmed fish globally by volume, produced primarily in Asia. As sentient vertebrates, their welfare in aquaculture production deserves attention commensurate with their scale.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Carp welfare receives little attention despite the enormous number of individuals involved in global production. Carp are vertebrates with demonstrated nociception and social behaviour. Polyculture pond systems where carp grow at lower densities with natural food sources achieve better welfare conditions than intensive monoculture systems. Improving harvest methods and oxygen management during intensive production phases would reduce the most acute welfare harms at relatively low cost.
