Hamsters are popular pets but are frequently misunderstood, with many kept in conditions that cause chronic stress and poor welfare due to inadequate space and enrichment.
Most commercially sold hamster cages are far too small to meet the psychological and physical needs of these active animals. A hamster confined in a 30 by 20 centimetre cage cannot express natural foraging, burrowing, or running behaviors, leading to chronic frustration and stereotypies. Many owners are unaware that hamsters need deep substrate for burrowing (at least 30 centimetres), hiding areas, and a wheel of at least 28 centimetres in diameter. Forcing social housing on naturally solitary species causes severe stress and injury.
