Parrots and other exotic birds are among the most cognitively complex companion animals, with needs that are frequently unmet in home environments.
Parrots are profoundly social, intelligent, and active animals whose needs are extraordinarily difficult to meet in typical home settings. A parrot alone in a cage for most of the day experiences a form of solitary confinement that causes psychological distress. Feather plucking, screaming, and aggression are behavioral signs of frustrated needs — not character flaws. The emotional bond parrots form with their owners makes rehoming deeply distressing. Many parrots develop chronic behavioral problems rooted in early deprivation that persist for life.
