Welfare Considerations

Hibernating bats disturbed in winter exhaust critical fat reserves and may die before spring. Demolition or renovation of buildings without prior bat surveys destroys maternity colonies that may have existed for decades. Light pollution outside roosts prevents bats from emerging to feed, causing starvation especially for nursing mothers.
