Each of the key behavioral systems — nesting, perching, dust bathing, foraging — has been shown to be highly motivated and to cause measurable distress when frustrated. Hens in barren battery cages showed behavioral signs of chronic stress across all five domains simultaneously. Enriched colony cages address some needs but often provide insufficient space and inadequate dust bath substrate. Only free-range and organic systems offer the potential to express the full behavioral repertoire, though implementation quality varies enormously between producers.
