Rainbow trout is one of the most widely farmed fish in Europe and North America, with welfare research providing increasingly clear guidance on stocking density, stunning, and environmental enrichment.
Rainbow trout welfare has received more scientific attention than most farmed fish species, generating clear evidence-based guidelines. High stocking densities cause chronic social stress and fin erosion injuries across the population. Poor water temperature management — particularly allowing water to exceed optimal ranges in summer — causes physiological stress, reduced feeding, and immune suppression. Electrical stunning before slaughter is effective and has been validated as humane, but is not universally implemented even in certified schemes. The existence of robust certification standards for trout makes consumer choice more meaningful for this species than for many others.
