Snakehead aquaculture operates largely outside the welfare regulatory frameworks that cover Atlantic salmon or trout. High stocking densities cause chronic social conflict and fin erosion in a species with naturally territorial behavior. Live markets, where fish are kept in minimal water conditions for extended periods before sale, create prolonged suffering. Air exposure during grading and transport causes significant stress even in a species physiologically adapted for brief air breathing. The absence of species-specific welfare standards means that improvement depends on individual producer commitment rather than regulatory requirement.
