Tortoises are long-lived reptiles with complex needs including correct hibernation management, UV provision, and diet that are frequently misunderstood, causing preventable suffering and premature death.
Tortoise welfare suffers most from the mismatch between their apparent simplicity and their actual complexity. A tortoise that sits in a small vivarium eating lettuce may appear fine but may be experiencing metabolic bone disease from UVB deficiency, chronic dehydration from insufficient water opportunity, and respiratory problems from incorrect temperature gradients. Hibernation management is particularly high-stakes: a tortoise that hibernates with an empty gut may die from digesting decomposing food; one that is underweight may not survive the winter. The tortoise shell does not protect against these chronic metabolic failures and they progress silently until the animal is severely compromised.
