Shrimp is the most consumed seafood globally by value, yet shrimp welfare research is in its infancy and most production systems apply no welfare considerations to animals that may have capacity for suffering.
Shrimp welfare sits at the frontier of animal sentience science and aquaculture reform. Evidence for sentience in crustaceans is genuinely uncertain but growing — shrimp show avoidance learning, stress responses, and behavioral changes under noxious stimuli that are consistent with pain experience. Eyestalk ablation, which is virtually universal in commercial shrimp hatcheries, involves crushing or cutting out the eyestalk to dysregulate reproductive hormones and induce spawning — an evidently painful procedure applied to animals that may be sentient, in the complete absence of welfare consideration. The scale is extraordinary: billions of individual animals per year. Even a small probability of sentience at this scale represents a significant moral risk.
