Bsal infection causes severe skin damage — the fungus digests keratin in salamander skin, leading to ulceration, loss of osmoregulation, and death. Affected salamanders experience a progressive deterioration: reduced movement, loss of appetite, skin lesions, and ultimately cardiovascular collapse from electrolyte imbalance. Death from Bsal is neither rapid nor painless. The welfare dimension is compounded by the scale — entire local populations experiencing this progression simultaneously. The mechanism of spread through the international pet trade makes this a human-caused welfare catastrophe that better biosecurity and trade regulation can prevent from reaching North American salamander communities.
