Cattle in feedlots spend months in bare pens with limited stimulation, leading to stereotypies and signs of chronic boredom and stress.
Cattle have evolved for complex, exploratory lives across varied landscapes. Confinement in bare pens with no substrate variety, no opportunity to forage and few stable social companions creates chronic psychological deprivation. This is reflected in stereotypic behaviours that serve no function and indicate frustration of motivational systems. Simple improvements — physical enrichments, stable social groups, substrate variety and lower densities — can substantially improve welfare within the existing feedlot model.
