Welfare Considerations

Freshwater turtles have complex physiological needs that are difficult and expensive to meet in captivity. Many captive turtles suffer from metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections and shell rot caused by inadequate husbandry. In the wild, population declines threaten ecosystem services turtles provide including seed dispersal and control of aquatic vegetation. Protecting nesting beaches, installing road crossing infrastructure and tightening pet trade regulations would benefit both captive and wild populations substantially.

Never release captive turtles into the wild — contact a reptile rescue instead
Install turtle crossing signs and advocate for culverts under roads near wetlands
Report illegal turtle collection or trade to wildlife authorities
If keeping a turtle, invest in proper UVB lighting, filtration and temperature control
Support organisations working to protect freshwater turtle nesting habitat
