Horse Endurance Riding and Welfare Concerns

Endurance riding covers distances of 50-160 km in a single event, raising serious concerns about metabolic collapse, lameness and fatigue in competing horses.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Endurance riding tests horses at the absolute limits of aerobic physiology. Even with mandatory vet checks, horses can pass checks and then collapse between holds. The financial and reputational pressures on riders and owners create incentives to push horses beyond safe limits. Horses cannot communicate distress in ways human officials can reliably detect mid-race. Reform priorities include mandatory GPS tracking of gait patterns, stricter heart rate recovery thresholds, independent veterinary authority to eliminate any horse regardless of rider objection, and reduced maximum distances at lower-tier events.
