Shrimp is the most consumed seafood globally, but intensive pond aquaculture creates welfare conditions of crowding, poor water quality and traumatic harvest for billions of sentient animals.
Shrimp welfare is a frontier issue in animal ethics. The sheer scale — hundreds of billions of shrimp farmed annually — means that even modest improvements in welfare conditions represent enormous reductions in aggregate suffering if shrimp are sentient. The evidence for shrimp sentience, while not conclusive, is sufficient under the precautionary principle to justify welfare standards. Reducing stocking densities, improving dissolved oxygen management, implementing humane slaughter through cold-water stunning before ice slurry, and eliminating the practice of eye stalk ablation in broodstock are all achievable improvements that would benefit billions of animals.
