The welfare difference between outdoor and intensive indoor pig production is substantial and measurable across every indicator. Outdoor pigs exhibit their full behavioural repertoire, demonstrate positive welfare states through play and relaxed resting, and show lower incidence of the stereotypies and aggression that characterise barren indoor environments. The practical challenges of outdoor production — biosecurity, nutrient management, climate vulnerability — are real but not insurmountable. Countries like Denmark and the UK have developed workable outdoor systems at commercial scale. Consumer willingness to pay a premium for outdoor pork and legislative standards that require access to outdoor areas are the two levers most likely to drive expansion.
