The welfare of cattle is not just about preventing suffering — it is increasingly about enabling positive experiences. Curiosity, social bonding, play and the satisfaction of exploratory behaviour are positive states that cattle can experience and that are denied by barren, restrictive housing. Welfare science has developed tools to measure these positive states — cognitive bias tests, play frequency scoring, ear posture analysis — and studies consistently show that higher-welfare environments produce more positive emotional profiles in cattle. Improving cattle welfare means designing systems that enable cows to be curious, to play, to form stable social bonds and to have positive interactions with familiar humans.
