Domestic cats used in biomedical research have complex social and environmental needs that are frequently inadequately met in standard laboratory housing conditions.
Laboratory cats represent a relatively small research population globally but one with complex, well-documented welfare needs that are frequently unmet. Cats in barren cages without vertical space, hiding opportunities or positive human interaction suffer measurable welfare deficits. The irony is that better-welfare cats produce better research data — less stressed animals show fewer stress-related physiological confounds and are easier to handle with less procedural interference. Pair or compatible group housing, structured human socialisation programmes, vertical space, environmental complexity and positive reinforcement training for procedural cooperation all improve both welfare and research quality simultaneously.
