Cubicle housing for dairy cows has largely replaced straw yard systems. When designed correctly, cubicles support welfare; when poorly designed, they cause lameness, injury, and abnormal behavior.
Cubicle housing is a welfare engineering challenge. A well-designed cubicle — the right dimensions, appropriate bedding, correct positioning of neck rails and brisket boards — encourages cows to use it fully and rest sufficiently. A poorly designed cubicle does the opposite: cows stand in the passage, develop hock lesions, and experience chronic fatigue. Welfare assessment of dairy housing now includes cubicle usage rates, lying time measured by accelerometers, and hock lesion scores. Research clearly shows that investment in cubicle redesign and better bedding pays back in reduced lameness rates and better milk production.
