Goats are highly intelligent, curious animals with strong motivation to explore, climb, and socialize. Dairy goat systems vary enormously in how well they meet these behavioral needs.
Dairy goat welfare depends heavily on whether their behavioral repertoire can be expressed. Curious, exploratory species in barren indoor environments develop stereotypies and show elevated stress indicators. Providing browse, elevated platforms, and varied substrates allows natural behavior. Kid separation causes acute distress — both dam and kid vocalize persistently for days. Extended suckling systems maintain dam-kid bonds longer but are commercially challenging. Pain relief for disbudding (horn removal) is essential but inconsistently provided. Access to outdoor browsing areas provides environmental complexity that indoor systems cannot replicate. Goat welfare certification is less developed than for cattle and pigs, representing a priority development area.
