Tilapia welfare is largely unstudied relative to their production scale. The species's hardiness means they tolerate conditions that would kill more sensitive fish, but tolerance is not absence of stress. At high stocking densities, territorial males inflict injuries on subordinate individuals. Oxygen depletion in poorly managed ponds causes acute distress before intervention. Hormonal sex reversal raises welfare questions about the fish experience during treatment. Harvest by draining ponds or net crowding causes acute hypoxia and handling stress. As tilapia farming scales globally, developing species-specific welfare standards is an urgent but underfunded research priority given the billions of individual fish involved.
