Grey heron welfare is primarily determined by water quality and fish availability. In polluted or over-fished water bodies, herons must travel further and wait longer for adequate food, increasing energy expenditure and stress. Chicks in poor prey years starve in substantial numbers — a natural process but one worsened by human-caused fish population decline. Herons are attracted to garden ponds and fish farms, bringing them into conflict with humans who sometimes resort to persecution. Legal non-lethal deterrents are available and effective.
