Snow goose population management raises genuine welfare dilemmas. Individual geese suffer through hunting — wounded birds that escape die slowly. But without population control, the habitat destruction caused by overabundant geese eliminates the breeding grounds for dozens of other species whose welfare is also affected. Agricultural subsidization of goose populations is an indirect human cause of this imbalance. Non-lethal deterrents are largely ineffective at the scale needed. Fertility control programs are logistically impossible given population size and mobility.
