Stocking density in shrimp aquaculture is one of the most impactful variables for individual shrimp welfare. Research into optimal density is beginning to shift industry standards.
Shrimp stocking density is the most practically manageable welfare variable in grow-out systems. The evidence that high densities reduce individual welfare is accumulating: impaired molting (a vulnerable and important biological process), increased competition and aggression, reduced oxygen availability, and disease susceptibility all worsen at densities above optimal. The commercial argument is that lower density means lower yield per pond, but the welfare-productivity alignment is actually positive — lower density shrimp grow faster, survive better, and require fewer treatments. The Shrimp Welfare Project is building the commercial case for lower-density production alongside the welfare case. Consumer-certified shrimp from lower-density systems creates market pull.
