Traditional animal welfare focused on preventing suffering. The emerging positive welfare framework asks additionally whether animals experience positive emotional states — and how to measure and promote them.
Positive welfare science is transforming how farm animal welfare is assessed and promoted. Rather than only asking "is this animal suffering?" it also asks "is this animal thriving?" The distinction matters: an animal might not be in pain but still live a joyless, behaviorally impoverished existence. Positive welfare indicators — play behavior, affiliative social contact, exploration of novel environments, vocalizations associated with positive anticipation — are being validated as objective welfare metrics. Farms with high positive welfare indicator scores consistently show lower disease rates, better production efficiency, and lower mortality. The business case aligns with the welfare case. Certification schemes are beginning to incorporate positive welfare indicators alongside negative outcome measures.
