RAS technology represents a genuine opportunity to improve fish welfare through environmental control, but this potential is not automatically realized. The ability to maintain optimal water quality creates better average welfare conditions than open systems subject to environmental variation. However, the same closed-loop design that enables control also means failures cascade rapidly — an oxygen system failure in a RAS tank can kill fish within hours. High stocking densities in many RAS installations reduce the welfare benefit of improved water quality. The most welfare-positive RAS operations combine careful density management, robust backup systems, continuous welfare monitoring, and species-appropriate enrichment within technically optimized water conditions.
