A welfare framework that only measures the absence of suffering is incomplete — it can obscure environments where animals survive but do not thrive. The shift toward positive welfare assessment represents a fundamental change in how farm animal welfare is conceptualized and measured. An animal that has adequate nutrition, no disease, and no injuries but is permanently bored, socially isolated, and unable to express natural behaviors is not experiencing good welfare despite meeting all traditional negative indicators. Validated positive welfare tools including play observation, cognitive bias testing, and positive social interaction scoring allow welfare assessors to identify whether animals are genuinely thriving. This shift demands more from farmers but also offers clearer pathways to quality differentiation and premium markets.
