Tilapia is the most widely farmed fish globally, with production conditions varying enormously between markets — from welfare-positive systems to severely overcrowded intensive operations.
Tilapia welfare is highly variable across the global production system. The species is genuinely hardy compared to salmon or sea bass, but hardiness does not mean welfare-indifferent — tilapia in severely overcrowded conditions still experience chronic stress with immune suppression, elevated cortisol, and increased susceptibility to the diseases that cause significant mortality in intensive systems. The welfare challenge is compounded by the diversity of production contexts, from small-scale subsistence operations with relatively good density conditions to industrial facilities in countries with minimal welfare oversight. Aquaculture certification schemes that include density requirements provide the most reliable welfare signal, though coverage of global tilapia production remains limited.
