BRD prevention is both the most impactful welfare intervention available in beef feedlots and a major economic priority — the costs of disease treatment, mortality, and production loss are enormous. The disease cascade begins with weaning stress, is amplified by transport stress, and is then exploited by a complex of bacterial and viral pathogens. Prevention strategies that reduce cumulative stress — pre-weaning vaccination, low-stress weaning practices, minimal transport, and gradual transition to feedlot conditions — reduce BRD incidence more effectively than treatment protocols. Animals that develop BRD experience significant respiratory distress that, if untreated or treated late, involves prolonged suffering. Early identification using precision monitoring technology and prompt treatment with appropriate antibiotics represent the welfare minimum for affected animals.
