Wild Animal Welfare

Wild Wolf Population Recovery and Coexistence Welfare

Wolf reintroduction and population recovery in Europe and North America has improved ecosystem health but also created welfare challenges for wolves in conflict zones with livestock agriculture.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The welfare of wolves in conflict zones is shaped by a cycle of depredation and retaliatory or preventive killing that causes ongoing suffering for individual animals and pack disruption. Trapping and snaring methods used in lethal control cause injury and stress before death, and sometimes kill non-target animals. Pack disruption through alpha removal often leads to pup starvation and increased pack instability. Investing in non-lethal deterrents and fair compensation systems is both more humane and, in the long term, more effective at maintaining coexistence than reactive lethal control.
