Tilapia welfare in aquaculture is often overshadowed by the environmental and social sustainability concerns of the industry, but the welfare of individual fish in intensive systems deserves direct attention. High-density tilapia farming creates conditions where dominance hierarchies generate chronic stress for subordinate individuals who cannot escape aggression from dominant fish. Fin damage, reduced feeding access, and physiological stress markers are common in overcrowded systems.
