Pet snakes are often housed in enclosures far too small for their behavioral needs, with inadequate temperature gradients, humidity, and enrichment that cause chronic stress and health problems.
Pet snake welfare is poorly understood by many owners who assume that because snakes move slowly and rarely vocalize distress, their enclosure conditions do not matter. In fact, snakes in inadequate enclosures show behavioral indicators of chronic stress — spending excessive time at the enclosure wall, refusing food, and showing abnormal activity patterns. Proper thermoregulation requires a temperature gradient that most commercially available small enclosures cannot provide. The welfare standard for companion snakes should be providing conditions that allow expression of the full behavioral repertoire the species evolved with, not merely keeping the animal alive.
