Narwhals are among the most acoustically sensitive marine mammals, and increasing ship traffic and seismic surveys in formerly ice-protected habitat are causing behavioral disruption with significant welfare implications.
Narwhal acoustic disturbance welfare is especially concerning because their physiological stress response to boat encounters may actually increase mortality risk. The cardiac freeze combined with intense muscular activity creates extreme circulatory strain that, in repeated exposure, could contribute to cardiovascular damage. Narwhals fleeing 50 kilometers from disturbance are expending enormous energy and potentially separating from feeding areas and social groups. As Arctic shipping increases, narwhals face an escalating mismatch between their evolved responses and the novel challenges of an industrializing Arctic, with real welfare consequences for this already ice-vulnerable species.
