Welfare science has evolved beyond the Five Freedoms framework toward positive welfare indicators that capture animals experiencing good lives rather than merely the absence of suffering.
The evolution from Five Freedoms to positive welfare represents a fundamental shift in how we conceptualize good animal lives. Freedom from suffering is necessary but insufficient for a good animal life — animals also need opportunities to experience positive states through play, social bonding, exploration, and behavioral expression. A pig that is healthy, uninjured, and adequately fed but lives in a barren, understimulating environment without social play is not experiencing good welfare despite meeting Five Freedoms criteria. The positive welfare framework demands more of farming systems and captures more of what matters morally for animals whose lives include the capacity for genuine enjoyment.
