Fish welfare during aquaculture handling procedures has historically been neglected, partly due to outdated assumptions about fish pain capacity. However, evidence from neuroscience and behavioral research now demonstrates that fish have nociceptive systems, display pain-related behaviors, and experience physiological stress responses qualitatively similar to those of mammals. Handling procedures without anesthesia — including sorting, vaccination, and broodstock stripping — cause acute stress that compromises immune function, increases disease susceptibility, and reduces growth performance. Anesthesia not only reduces suffering during the procedure but also improves practical outcomes: fish recover faster, handle better, and suffer less physical injury. The cost of approved anesthetic agents is modest relative to production value. Industry leaders in salmon and trout farming are increasingly adopting anesthesia protocols as standard, driven by both welfare certification requirements and evidence of production benefits.
