Dairy cow lameness is simultaneously one of the most prevalent welfare problems in farming and one of the most responsive to management intervention. Lame cows are experiencing genuine pain: behavioral studies using operant conditioning have demonstrated that lame cows choose pain-relieving analgesics when given free choice, confirming their analgesic motivation. The chronic nature of lameness in heavily producing dairy cows — where pain reduces movement to feeding areas and lying comfort — creates cascading welfare impacts on nutrition, body condition, and social participation. Despite this severity, many farms have high lameness prevalence because the condition develops gradually and farmers adapt expectations to what they observe daily. Regular locomotion scoring by trained staff breaks this normalization by providing objective comparison against benchmark standards. Combined intervention programs including flooring improvement, regular preventive hoof trimming, prompt treatment with analgesics and appropriate foot care, and isolation of severely lame cows for recovery have achieved dramatic reductions in prevalence at farms that implement them systematically.
