Horse stable design has historically prioritized owner convenience and horse management over the behavioral needs of horses themselves. The traditional loose box — a single horse in a small enclosed stall — represents a major departure from the natural ranging, social, and foraging behavior of horses. Horses are highly motivated for continuous low-level movement during foraging and for social interaction with conspecifics: both needs are profoundly frustrated in conventional stabling. The behavioral consequences are stark: stereotypies including crib-biting, weaving, and stall walking develop in significant proportions of stabled horses and once established are difficult to eliminate even with improved housing. Modern alternative housing approaches including track systems and communal housing with safe-segregation options better align management with behavioral needs. The evidence strongly supports maximum turnout duration as the most impactful welfare intervention for stabled horses, with even partial-day paddock access significantly reducing stereotypy development compared to full stabling.
