Tilapia welfare presents a distinctive challenge because the species tolerance for poor water quality conditions — lower dissolved oxygen, higher ammonia, warmer temperatures than would stress salmonids — has led to a culture of pushing environmental conditions in intensive production rather than optimizing them for welfare. Tilapia can survive in conditions that would kill more sensitive species, but surviving is not the same as welfare. Research demonstrates that tilapia exposed to suboptimal water quality show chronic stress indicators, impaired immune function, and accelerated disease progression that are welfare-relevant even when acute mortality is not observed.
