Farrowing crate welfare represents one of the most intractable challenges in farm animal welfare advocacy because it involves a genuine trade-off between sow welfare and piglet survival risk. Sows in farrowing crates are severely restricted during the most physiologically and behaviorally demanding period of their reproductive lives: they cannot turn around, perform the nesting behaviors they are strongly motivated for, or engage in the ranging and exploratory behavior normal between farrowings. The acute welfare harm is significant. However, the concern that drove crate development — accidental piglet crushing by the sow — is real, and loose farrowing systems do require more intensive management to achieve comparable outcomes. The evidence from best-practice loose farrowing operations is encouraging: appropriate pen design including protective rails, adequate space, good management, and sow selection for maternal behavior achieves commercially acceptable piglet mortality while restoring meaningful behavioral freedom. The transition requires investment in both infrastructure and management skill, with the welfare payoff improving as the sector develops experience with loose system management.
