Dust bathing is one of the strongest and most studied behavioral motivations in laying hens. Its prevention in cage systems causes significant welfare harm, while its provision in enriched systems delivers measurable welfare benefits.
Dust bathing in laying hens provides one of the clearest demonstrations of the gap between animal behavioral need and what conventional cage housing provides. Research on dust bathing has been instrumental in developing the scientific framework for behavioral need as a welfare concept: hens continue to perform dust bathing movements on wire floors without substrate, and show a rebound increase in dust bathing when substrate becomes available after deprivation, demonstrating that the motivation is internal rather than simply responsive to substrate presence. These findings established that preventing dust bathing frustrates a genuine behavioral need rather than simply preventing an incidental behavior. The welfare significance of this frustration extends beyond the specific behavior: chronic inability to perform highly motivated behaviors is associated with broader psychological welfare impairment. Practical provision of dust bathing substrate in free-range, barn, and well-designed enriched colony systems achieves good welfare outcomes on this dimension when substrate quality, quantity, and accessibility are managed appropriately.
