Freshwater mussels are among the most endangered animals on earth, yet their welfare status is rarely considered. Understanding their biology and the value of protecting them has implications for both conservation and welfare ethics.
Freshwater mussel welfare occupies genuinely uncertain scientific territory regarding individual experience, but the ecological welfare argument for their conservation is strong and clear. Mussel filter-feeding activity directly improves water quality and clarity for all aquatic animals in a river system: cleaner water means better oxygen levels, reduced harmful algae, and improved habitat quality that benefits the welfare of fish, invertebrates, and every organism dependent on that aquatic system. From this perspective, mussel conservation has welfare value that extends far beyond the mussels themselves.
