Tapirs are ancient, shy forest mammals whose populations are declining across South America and Southeast Asia. Their welfare and conservation require addressing deforestation, hunting pressure, and road mortality.
Tapir welfare involves the combination of threats facing large, slow-reproducing forest mammals in rapidly changing landscapes across their range. Tapirs breed slowly — one offspring every 2-3 years — meaning that population recovery from hunting or habitat-driven mortality is extremely slow and losses are difficult to compensate through reproduction. Individual tapirs struck by vehicles at night represent welfare emergencies: tapirs are large enough that road strikes often result in severe injury rather than immediate death, meaning injured animals may survive for extended periods in severe pain before dying or being euthanized if discovered. The solitary and nocturnal behavior of tapirs makes rapid welfare response to injured individuals challenging. Habitat connectivity is the dominant welfare and conservation need: tapirs require large areas of intact forest with appropriate water sources, and fragmentation that forces them into human-dominated landscapes increases all mortality risks simultaneously. Conservation corridors that enable tapir movement between forest fragments are therefore welfare-positive by reducing the frequency of dangerous road crossings and human encounters that characterize the edges of fragmented habitat.
