Enriched colony cages replaced conventional battery cages in the EU in 2012, but remain controversial. Understanding their actual welfare provision compared to both conventional cages and cage-free systems informs better standards.
Enriched colony cages occupy a contested welfare position: they are unambiguously superior to conventional battery cages in providing some behavioral opportunity, but remain far from meeting the behavioral needs of laying hens whose natural behavior requires significantly more space and environmental complexity than any cage system can provide. The practical welfare achievements of enriched cages — reduced mortality, some expression of nest-seeking and perching behavior, reduced feather pecking compared to some cage-free systems — are real but partial. The fundamental constraint of 750 cm² per hen means that locomotory behaviors, full dust bathing, and the social structuring that hens perform in more naturalistic environments remain impossible. The keel bone fracture problem, common in both cage and cage-free systems, reflects a systemic welfare challenge that requires attention in all housing types. The trajectory of the global laying hen industry, driven by consumer and retailer cage-free commitments, is toward cage-free systems — the welfare case for completing this transition, combined with evidence-based management of cage-free system welfare challenges, represents the most welfare-positive direction for the sector.
