Gibbons are the smallest and most acrobatic of the apes, living exclusively in forest canopy. Their welfare and conservation depend critically on maintaining the tall, intact forest they require for locomotion and breeding.
Gibbon welfare is uniquely tied to forest canopy structure in ways that make them among the most immediately affected primates by deforestation. Their brachiation locomotion — the hand-over-hand swinging that allows extraordinary speed through the canopy — requires continuous, tall trees with appropriate branch structure. A gibbon encountering a gap in the canopy cannot simply walk around it on the ground: they are physically adapted for arboreal life and ground travel is awkward, slow, and exposes them to predators and poaching risk. Forest fragmentation therefore creates immediate behavioral welfare problems alongside the population viability concerns. The pet trade creates individual welfare emergencies of particular severity: gibbon mothers maintain close bonds with their young for several years, and the killing required to obtain infants destroys family units whose welfare significance has been documented through field studies of gibbon territorial song duets. Rehabilitation of ex-pet gibbons requires teaching social skills and forest navigation abilities that normally develop through years of maternal guidance — a lengthy and resource-intensive process with variable success depending on age at capture and duration of captivity.
