Sea snakes are highly venomous marine reptiles that play important ecological roles in coral reef ecosystems. Despite being poorly studied, their welfare faces threats from bycatch, pollution, and coral reef degradation.
Sea snake welfare sits at the intersection of limited scientific knowledge, genuine conservation concern, and the broader question of reptile welfare that has historically received inadequate attention. Sea snakes have nociceptive systems and show avoidance behaviors consistent with pain responses, but the depth of their welfare-relevant experience remains poorly characterized compared to better-studied vertebrates. The conservation welfare concern is clearest at the population level: several sea snake species with extremely restricted ranges face extinction risk from coral reef degradation, targeted harvest, and bycatch, and the welfare of a population facing extinction encompasses the loss of behavioral repertoire, social interaction, and ecological function that cannot be recovered once lost. Individual bycatch welfare involves acute stress from trawl capture, exposure to air, and handling before mortality or release. The limited commercial value of sea snake skins relative to the conservation cost they create represents a leverage point where consumer demand reduction could achieve meaningful conservation impact. Coral reef protection that maintains prey fish communities represents the most consequential habitat welfare intervention for reef-dependent sea snake species.
